Fireworks are a part of many holiday celebrations across the world. Humans may find the tradition beautiful and exciting, but animals feel differently. The loud, bright bursts can cause outright terror for many animals.

According to the Animal Humane Society an estimated 10 million pets go missing per year in the United States, and according to the Kennel Club there is an 81% increase in dogs going missing during firework seasons.

Here are 8 tips to keep your dog as safe and comfortable as possible during fireworks:

1. Exercise your dog earlier in the day before fireworks start, preferably on leash for extra security.
2. Make sure that your property is secured so your dog can’t escape. Close all gates, windows, and doors to prevent your dog from bolting if they get startled.
3. In case of escape, make sure that your dog has identification. Microchips and identification tags help your dog get returned to you if others find them, while a GPS tracker can help you find your dog yourself.
4. Get your dog settled somewhere safe before the fireworks begin. Putting your dog in a secure place with a long lasting treat and background music playing can help them feel safe.
5. If your dog does get scared, please comfort them! It’s a common myth that if you pet or console your dog during an anxious episode, they’ll be more afraid. This isn’t true. We cannot positively reinforce fear, so cuddle and reassure your dog as much as they need!
6. If you plan on going to a fireworks celebration, please leave your dog safely at home. Being outdoors in a crowd with loud, bright explosions is not fun for a dog. As much as we may want to include our dog, there are some events (like fireworks!) that they would rather miss.
7. If your dog has particularly strong firework phobia, consider discussing possible medications with your vet.
